Boring??
Terra Mullings, College Freshman

This web site discusses listening effectively to a boring lecture. One of the tips they discuss is to adjust your note taking system which I have always done but have never heard anyone offer as a solution to boring lectures. I believe that while all of one's note taking strategies should have similarities so that it is easy to remember and understand what you have written. Changing it up has always allowed me to tailor my notes to each teacher/speaker's differentiating lecture techniques. I was surprised and pleased to find someone giving that advice that I had already found to be true.

Taking the boring out of lectures. I like the way they find the positive aspects of listening to a lecture to stay focused. Shifting how you take notes to follow the lecture is not something I had thought about, but it's a good idea. Number eight was enlightening, not letting personal emotions block information. Very helpful.

This website lists 10 steps on how to become that effective listener instead of the poor listener. It states to get to know your professor personally, aggressively tackle difficult material, and choose to find the subject useful. That is just naming a few of the 10 tips.

Often I find myself having issues listening to lectures from courses that I don't find that benefit me. From now on I am going to take these steps into consideration.

This was a really nice list of listening tips. I laughed a little at description for the second one though. I wonder if there are situations where looking good can increase memory retention in listeners.

I did think that the "Stay attentive" section was a bit too general. I think staying attentive comes more with the territory of "choosing to find the subject useful." Lastly, I would put a lot of purpose on not becoming emotionally "buzzed" so to say. I've had problems where specific words distract me from the topic at hand. This was a really cathartic page to read.
