How to Survive Microbiology

Plus tips from a biology tutor!

I thought this article was pretty good advice for those embarking on a microbiology course. It began with a small explanation of what the course will cover and how the subject affects our lives. It is good that the article stressed coming to class prepared and open-minded, reading the material before the lecture and reviewing the material afterward. It is also good that the article suggested getting together with other classmates to help clarify the subject.

Stressing class participation is good also. The author remind us that much of this subject can't simply be learned by memorizing facts and taking or reading notes. It must be hands on. On thing that was left out by the author and it is a great tool for study in a Microbiology class, that is flashcards, especially for identification of microorganisms. Of course, as the author says, these things can not be simply memorized; the student must also use the slides and practice the identification hands on.

I think studying Microbiology or anything in general is going to be easy by practicing. But as it was well said in the article: reading the material before the test is going to help you learn it not only memorizing it for a few days.

Well, this article the author went into what the class was about, which really helps me understand why I might need to be into my work. He talks about class ethics as well, which in my opinion I think are incredibly important. I am just out of high school, so hearing how it really is from a Bio major is excellent. I am ready now.
