How to Read Topographical Maps

Calling on all History Majors to apply this resources
Kyle Roman , College Senior
Portland State, Portland Oregon

This resource is about reading Topographical Maps. But the site the itself is immensely more useful to us History Majors.

We have learned that most of the history of Westward Expansion is centered around the Oregon Trail. We follow the routes wagon trains took, we play the game, we read biographies and diaries of people who rode or walked their way across the Great Plains on the Trail.

But we never learn about what happened afterwards! We never find out about the places people visited, where they went or lived. This resource, http://Ghosttowns.com and a linked resource, http://pnwphotoblog.com/ghost-towns/ between them have the history of thousands of towns across the West. Many of them are linked to figures in the Westward Expansion that we learned about for years.

Now, we get to know what happened to them AFTER then arrived at their destination. To me this completes the story and makes Westward Expansion and Manifest Destiny more real in my eyes!
