Practical Exercises

Fantastic Intro to Introductory Astronomy
Derek Johnson, College Sophomore
Sierra College, Rocklin, Ca

I thought that this study skills review was very helpful in several aspects. Not only does it lay out a detailed description of the activities the students will be participating in, but it also provides visual examples of good and bad submissions. The page does not come off sounding like a general syllabus, and seems more like a clear agenda.

The author points out that it is easy to copy the observational data, and doing so is considered academic dishonesty. It has been my experience that there are a few people in every class that want to copy values and charts from other students, and I appreciate the author making the point that it is not as harmless an action as it might seem. By the end of the page it is very clear what is expected of the students, and the detailed descriptions provided should go a long way to clearing any confusion the students may have of what is being asked of them. The author also encourages students to approach them with any further questions, and provides a link for further information as to what constitutes wrongdoing in regards to the data being collected.

Overall I appreciate the clarity and honesty that the paper provides. As a student, I would feel very confident in my knowledge of what to do, and what is expected of me.
