Accounting Study and Test Taking Tips
Sierra College, Rocklin, CA
I think resource “Accounting Study and Test” is most helpful for me. There have three main topics in the article. And all these ideas are the skills I use when I study and tutor other students. In accounting study, learning key concepts is the key to learning quickly in this subject. For example, if you finish chapter 1 and start chapter then you feel confused. It’s better to go back chapter 1 clarified the points you are confused with. I always make sure I understand the chapter before I jump to the next chapter. Because these concepts are connected together and build upon the assignments.
When I tutor students, I found out the reason they feel confused about the assignment is they are lost in the previous chapters. Then I go over the previous chapters with them. They thank me because they finally know where they are lost. They know how to fix the problem after I told them previous knowledge is very important.
The next useful way is work problems to understand “how”. Having more practice in problem solving is the best way to understand how to work on accounting problems. I do a lot of practice when I study this subject. And I will tell tutee to go over the demonstration problem in the textbook until understand how to work on them.
For the tips for preparing for and taking exams I think there are some ideas that are useful. First, be sure that you can work problems representing all concepts covered without the aid of the book or solutions manual. That means you understand how to work in accounting. Second, read the question carefully in its entirety to determine the precise requirements. Sometimes we do the question wrong, because we miss some key words in the question then we'ill have totally wrong answers. I will circle the key words in the question in case I miss them. I tell tutee to do that too. All in all, I like the skills in this resource because I use most of them in my studying and tutoring other students. They are very practical.

I am a tutor of accounting 1 and elements in accounting and I found this article very thought provoking and plan on incorporating it into my sessions with my tutee's as time management on the test seems to be a big deal. They seem hurried and often times don't read the question entirely before trying to answer them. Also the point you make about multiple choice answers having distractors is very insightful. The advice you give about underlining or circling key information to help weed through the information also helps a lot.
