Brief Suggestions on Studying a Foreign Language

Helpful article
Sierra College, Grass Valley, CA

I found these tips to be very helpful and true when learning a foreign language. Practicing with others can be a huge study advantage because it allows for several different types of learning to take place, all of which increase the students’ comprehension of the language and usage. Using a combination of verbal, auditory, visual, and tactile learning styles definitely helps with learning a foreign language because learning a language as an adult or older teenager is very different from becoming immersed in your native language as you were when you were younger. It takes more effort and concentration to learn grammar rules, vocabulary, and syntax as an older person because there is not necessarily the immersion factor, and, as the article points out, there is also more self-consciousness as an older language learner.
